The Independent National Electoral Commissioner, INEC, Delta State has said it is wrong to assume that all staff of the commission are corrupt despite all the credible elections it has conducted and innovations carried out.

Elder Abasi Ikoiwak, Resident Electoral Commissioner, Delta State told Daily Independent in Asaba on the fall out of a meeting with all the members of the commission in the state, maintaining that people see INEC staff as corrupt and that it is important to change the perception.

He said as part of the strategy for more credible elections, the new hall being built by the commission in Asaba when commissioned would serve as a distribution venue of electoral materials unlike a situation where they do it at the Central Bank of Nigeria Office which is only supposed to store the materials

The commissioner vowed to deal with corrupt staff by showing them the way out and at the same time appreciates the good ones through compensation, which he said informed why some corrupt staff were suspended from the commission recently.

While agreeing that some staff may have connived with politicians like the case in Delta where some staff of the commission allegedly facilitated the stealing of 117 result sheets from the commission office in Asaba, a document he said should have been in trust of the staff but did it to undermine the commission.

On  the agitation by some adhoc staff payment, he said the remaining money is in the bank and that many of them has no genuine account to be entitled to the money because they came through the back door, without documentation and cannot come to the fore to defend how they become Adhoc Staff.

‘’Staff of the commission should be able to protect sensitive materials either in the office or field, handle work diligently and in good manner. We shall hence forth select some whose action holds us down for punishment, suspension and expulsion.’’
