The Independent National Electoral Commission on Monday declared the Bayelsa State governorship election conducted last weekend as inconclusive.

This followed the cancellation of Sunday’s  rescheduled governorship poll in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Baritor Kpagih, announced this at the Yenagoa Council City Hall, venue for the collation of the results from the local, government areas.

He said that the conduct of the governorship election in Southern Ijaw was substantially marred by violence,, snatching of ballot boxes and hostage taking of electoral officers.

Kpagih, who made the announcement in the presence of INEC’s Chief Returning Officer, Azana Akpagu p, and other National Returning Officers and top security personnel, said a new date would be announced later.

“As of today, 7 December 2015 the result of the election in all the local government areas except Southern Ijaw have been received and collated.

“Reports of the governorship election conducted in Southern Ijaw on the 6 December 2015 revealed that the  election was substantially marred by violence, ballot box snatching and hostage taking of electoral officers.

“This falls short of the international acceptable standards for credible election.

“Consequently, the commission has in the interest of the integrity of the process cancelled the governorship  election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

“A new date will be announced in due course”, the Bayelsa REC said.

Before Kpagih’s announcement, the results from Ogbia and Nembe Local Government Areas had been declared.

In  Ogbia, the PDP polled 13,051 votes while the APC scored 9,106 votes.

In Nembe, Dickson scored 10,768 votes while Sylva got 6,974 votes.
