The Federal Government has been advised to review its tractor hiring facilities to include small holder farmers in order to enhance access to the facilities, which in turn will go a long way to boost productivity.

This call was made during an interview by Aminu Ubali, a farmer in Hadejia, Jigawa State, who observed that peasant farmers were not accessing tractors and other services by the federal government due to high cost of the equipment and cumbersome protocols.

In the same vein, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has also called on farmers from the Northern part of the country to plant drought resistant seeds against the likelihood of inadequate rainfall in the Northern part of the country this rainy season.

Reacting to the advice, the farmers are requesting that the government supply them fertilizers, drought resistant and early maturing seeds, to guard against the losses at the harvest, so that they will be able to cultivate their farmlands in good time before the dry-spell.

However, reports have it that the federal government has distributed fertilizers, seeds and chemicals to more than 250,000 registered farmers for dry season activity under its Growth Enhancement Support (GES) scheme.
