Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) Enugu has blamed the downturn in the country’s economy for its inability to pay staff salaries.

The institution said this while reacting to a publication in one of the national dailies, alleging that the management has made efforts to see Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi over the non payment of staff salaries but to no avail.

In a press release by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), Dr Ifeanyi Ojobor on Friday, IMT debunk the insinuation, saying that: “For the avoidance of doubt, we state emphatically that the Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, contrary to reports, has graciously granted audience to the Rector, Registrar and other members of IMT Management on more than two occasions to deliberate on the matter, since his inauguration on May 29. In fact, the latest was on Wednesday, July 15, 2015 in his office at the Lion Building.

“On the non-payment of workers’ salaries, which is unfortunate, but not peculiar to IMT, we state that it is basically as a result of the downturn in the nation’s economy due to the drastic fall in the price of oil in the international market.

“The reason why the state government has not released our subvention, which enables us to pay salaries, may not be unconnected with the fact that the state allocation from the federation account has drastically reduced due the current economic crisis in the country.

“However, we are certain that the well-meaning and magnanimous Governor of Enugu State, who is passionate about the well-being of workers, is attending to our problems” IMT stated.

The Institute  called on the entire staff to be patient and show more understanding with the management and the government, as all efforts were being made to address the situation for the overall interest of all stakeholders.
