Implication Of Chad’s Withdrawal To Nigeria

Chibuike Chukwu, LAGOS
Citing financial burden, the Mena of Chad, on Sunday, announced its
withdrawal from the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The announcement means that the country will not travel to Dar es Salam
for its reverse fixture against Tanzania. Tanzania had earlier
defeated the Chadian team by 1-0 in Ndjamena.

According to CAF regulations, the countries in Group G have been reduced to
three and all the matches involving Chad, both ones played already and ones
yet to play have been cancelled.

Consequently, instead of seven points, the Pharaohs of Egypt still lead the
group with four points following by Nigeria with two points after draws
against Tanzania and Egypt respectively.

The implications of the group’s teams standing means that Nigeria’s
outright defeat by Egypt will automatically see the Super Eagles out
of championship scheduled for Gabon in 2017.

Also, based on CAF regulation, the 13 group winners and the two best
overall runners-up will qualify for the tournament.

Sadly, a group with three teams would not be considered when picking
the best losers. It then places huge responsibility on Nigeria to beat
Egypt on Tuesday.
