Impersonation: Court Remands Lawyer In Prison

An Akure High Court has ordered a lawyer, Ganiyu Ashiru, to be remanded in prison custody, for refusing to appear before the court in a case of impersonation brought against him by the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), Ondo State Ministry of Justice.

Ashiru was brought before the court on allegations of parading himself as the Obaaja of Ijaja, a quarter within Arigidi-Akoko town under the rule of the Zaaki of Arigidi, Oba Yisa Abu Olanipekun.

The accused, who has been in police custody since the court refused his bail application at the last sitting, was brought to court as directed on Friday, July 10, 2015 but the judge adjourned all cases in till July 20, ordering Ashiru to be remanded in prison custody.

Supporters of the accused person, who came in large numbers from Arigidi, almost set the court on fire, demanding that Ashiru should not be taken to prison.

Further crisis was prevented when lawyers in the court persuaded the people not to take the law into their hands and allow the law to take it course
