Imo: Strike Grounds Economic Activities As Workers Dare Okorocha

Commercial activities and intra-city movement of goods and services in Imo state are now at their lowest ebb following the raging strike embarked upon by the organised labour in the state over the recent increase in the pump price of fuel by the Federal Government.
This is despite threats of dismissal from service by the state government to the workers should they join the struggle initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) which commenced on Wednesday.
Our correspondent who monitored the situation noted that virtually all government establishments, especially the imposing civil service secretariat, House of Assembly Complex, local government council headquarters, the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), among others, were still under lock and key.
Armed policemen and men of the Imo Security Networks were however stationed at the entrance gates, even as some top civil servants who courageously arrived the secretariat were disappointed as they could not gain access to their offices.
A source close to Mr. Calistus Ekenze, the Head of Service, confided in Independent that the anger-stricken workers had traditionally yearned for an opportunity like this to take a pound of flesh from the state government because of its insensitivity to their plight.
