The Imo State Police Command said in Owerri on Monday that one person was killed and several others wounded when officers confronted some cult members who had been terrorising members of Egbu Community in Owerri, Imo State.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dave Akinremi, made this known during a news briefing at police headquarters, Owerri.

He also said that other suspects were arrested during the raid, which led to the gun duel.

Akinremi said the suspects were arrested after a tip-off that 15 members of the group were holding a meeting near Egbu Girls Secondary School.

With the information, operatives of the command immediately swung into action, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

He added that three of the suspects had gunshot wounds and were arrested, while others escaped.

One Chimaobi Iheme (alias Saka), was identified as the head of the cult group, and he died while receiving treatment for his wounds.

The suspects arrested at the scene included Chinwekene Opara, 25, and Tochukwu Amarikwa, 24.

The police boss said the suspects have made statements and confessed to being members of a cult known as Neo Black Movement (a.k.a Black Axe). Items recovered from the suspects included three locally made pistols, seven live cartridges, two cutlasses, one axe, six phones, one tricycle (Keke NAPEP) and one motorcycle.
