Jordan Henderson is hoping to grow into his new captaincy role after the Liverpool midfielder was named as Steven Gerrard’s successor on Friday morning.

The England international was widely tipped to succeed the Liverpool legend in the prestigious role, although James Milner was touted as an outside contender to take over the captain’s armband.

Henderson has emerged as a key player for manager Brendan Rodgers in recent seasons after he initially appeared to be heading towards an early exit under the Northern Irishman in 2012.

And the new Liverpool captain expressed his delight to be handed the responsibility ahead of the 2015/16 Premier League campaign.

“I’m absolutely delighted and proud. It is a great honour and a huge privilege to be named as the captain of this football club,” Henderson told Liverpool’s website.

“When Steven [Gerrard] wasn’t in the team last season, I tried to do the best I could when I stepped in and took the armband. Now I’ll be looking to carry that on and continue to grow as a captain.

“I’ll look to give my best all of the time, put the team firmly first and try to give them – or help them with – whatever they need from me.”

The England man was one of the Merseyside outfit’s more consistent performers this season, racking up over 3,000 minutes of Premier League action.

Henderson, who signed a new long-term deal with the five-time European champions last month, has scored six goals and has made nine assists in 36 Premier League games last term.
