The South East Progressives Assembly (SEPA) has said the failure of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to leverage on its supremacy in the Senate to produce the principal officers was because the party was made up of ‘strange bedfellows and wounded politicians’.

Speaking to newsmen in Umuahia the President of the group Ebere Uzoukwu said the APC had shown that it was not prepared for the task of governing the nation and that the disappointment of the electorates would soon begin to be seen.

“A situation the APC failed to leverage on its majority in the senate with eleven (11) members to produce both the president of the senate and deputy clearly exposed the party’s greed and ignorance to participatory democracy.”

“We had expected the APC to harmonise divergent interests as regards to NASS leadership positions before the inauguration. The best approach to the challenge includes placing Nigeria as a nation above other sectional and individual interests, showing regard to the opposition and subtly appealing to the conscience of its senators and members of House of Representatives-elect towards upholding the ideals of the party as one united political family.”

“To the shock of many Nigerians, APC resorted to intimation and unconstitutional mock elections apparently to satisfy the desire of a few individuals to pride themselves as leaders of the party. Even the ‘New PDP’ bloc that raised the capacity of APC to win the 2015 general elections was neglected and sidelined, which obviously resulted to the sudden revolution, remarriage and consensus between the PDP senators-elect and APC’s senators of ‘New PDP’ bloc to produce bi-partisan leadership of APC senate president and PDP deputy senate president”.

SEPA, however congratulated Sen. Bukola Saraki and Sen. Ike Ekweremadu for their election as president and deputy of the senate and members of the 8th Senate for ultimately showing patriotism in choosing their leadership.
