Chibuike Chukwu, LAGOS
Daniel Igali, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), has promised to win medals at the Rio Olympics.
The promise is sequel to the country’s six wrestlers qualifying for the Games in Algeria at the weekend. Nigeria won six of the 30 African/Oceania slots for the Olympic.
Four female wrestlers and two male freestyle wrestlers qualified for the Games.
Igali praised the efforts of the wrestlers and also paid special tribute to the Sports Ministry for supporting the Federation to Algeria.
“The wrestlers were very outstanding and we must thank them for this. They put in their best and that has given me the confidence that we will go to Brazil and represent Nigeria well.
“With seven wrestlers, our plan is to win an Olympic medal; that will be a memorable end to all these planning,” he said.
It will be recalled that six out of 10 wrestlers that presented by Nigeria at the qualifiers pick Olympic slots. They will join Odunayo Adekuoroye, who had earlier qualified by winning a bronze medal in the 53kg weight class at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas on the road to Rio.
Amas Daniel in the 65kg weight class and Soso Tamara in the 97kg were the latest qualifiers in the freestyle wrestling, while earlier in the same tournament, four female wrestlers, Mercy Genesis (48kg), Aminat Adeniyi (58kg), Blessing Oborududu (63kg) and Hannah Reuben (69Kg) booked their passage.
In the male freestyle category, Africa champion, Daniel Amas (65K) maintained his form by defeating Australian Sahit Prizreni and will be joined by Africa bronze medallist, Soso Tamara to hoist the Nigerian flag in the freestyle wrestling at the Games.
