The National Museum of Unity in Ibadan has appealed to Oyo State Government to provide it with annual intervention funds.

Its curator, Mr Amos Olorunnipa, made the appeal in Ibadan in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said the funds were needed for preservation of the cultural sites and cultural artifacts across the state.

He also sought the assistance of the government to enable the museum preserve monument sites.

Olorunnipa appealed to the people of the state to protect monument sites within their communities.

He said the museum would celebrate World Monument Day on April 21. “The actual date is April 18, but we decided to celebrate ours on April 21. The curator said the theme of this year’s World Monument Day is, `Nigeria’s Heritage: Vision to Action’.

According to him, the theme was chosen to create awareness on the need to preserve and conserve heritage sites across the country.

“We want people to know that they are part of the maintenance of the monuments,’’ he said.

The curator said several activities had been lined to commemorate the day.

Some of the activities he said, includes visit to monument sites like Foko Palace in Ibadan, lecture, interactive sessions and cultural displays.
