Prof. Gbemiga Adewale, the Provost, Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology (OYSCATECH), Igboora, says social protection and agricultural development intervention are powerful tools to improve food security.

Adewale said this in his message to mark the World Food Day in Igboora on Thursday, Oyo State.

He described the theme for this year’s Day entitled, “Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle of Rural Poverty, ’’ as timely.

Adewale said that the design of social protection and agricultural interventions had prevented strong developmental impacts on the country.

He said agricultural development programmes could reinforce social protection if rural production and consumption could be diversified and intensified through investments in agricultural assets and infrastructure.

Adewale said OYSCATECH, apart from providing educational training in various areas of agriculture, had provided social services to the community in an attempt to tackle poverty.

“Some of the community services provided include distribution of free vitamin A cassava stems and other cassava variety stems to farmers as well as training on integrated fish farming and improved cassava production,’’ he said.

He called on government at all levels and non- governmental organisations to work together in providing accessible funds to small scale farmers.

Adewale said that the farmers should be organised into manageable groups for them to access the funds.

The provost, who also advocated proper monitoring and coordination of the farmers by extension agents, called for adequate marketing of their produce.
