The Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Health, Linus Awute,  has said  that over 177,000 people were estimated to have died in 2012 as a result of severe or moderate pains from HIV or cancer in Nigeria.

Also, in the same year, the utilization of narcotic medicines such as morphine was enough to treat only 266 people, representing 0.2 per cent coverage of pain treatment need.

He noted that in an effort to improve access to essential pain medicines to patients suffering from cancer and HIV/AIDS, the Federal Government introduced a project christened ‘Pain Free Hospital Initiative.’

While launching the project in Abuja on Thursday, July 16, 2015, Awute said that pain relief was a core component of cancer and HIV treatment.

He disclosed: “It is estimated that  approximately 80 per cent of people with advanced cancer and 50 per cent of HIV require narcotic medicines to treat moderate or severe pains.

“In response to this challenge, the Federal Ministry of Health approved the collaboration with the American Cancer Society’s Treat the Pain Programme to improve access to essential pain medicines in Nigeria.”
