LagosHeartland Football Club of Owerri has been relegated from Nigerian topflight league for the first time in their history.

The Naze Millionaires, before the last round of matches on Sunday, paired champions, Enugu Rangers, as the only clubs yet to taste relegation in the domestic season.

Right from the time the club was known as Spartans of Owerri and down to the Iwuanyanwu Nationale era, Heartland, which are the biggest casualties in this season’s campaign, needed to win against Plateau United to remain in the elite league.

They made good their intention by going ahead in the first half before the home side equalized in the second half. The result left Heartland with 44 points, which are not enough to keep them in the topflight.

Finalists in the 1988 CAF Champions league, Heartland have won the league on four occasions in 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1993.

They also won the FA Cup (now Federations Cup) in 1988, 2011 and 2012 and were finalists in the 1988 and 2009 CAF Champions League.

Following Heartland down were Warri Wolves, Ikorodu United and Giwa FC.

Wolves ended with 45 points, same with MFM, which defeated IfeanyiUba 1-0 in Lagos. But the Warri side have inferior goals difference.

In the other results, Abia Warriors, who needed a point to escape the drop shot down shooting Stars of Ibadan 2-1 at the Umuahia Township Stadium while Kano Pillars were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Niger Tornadoes of Minna.
