Coach Alphonsus Dike may be sacked by Heartland FC of Owerri following the team’s 1-0 loss to Papilo FC in the final of the 2016 Imo State FA Cup over the weekend. Heartland is the defending champion.
Sources told Independent on Monday that the management of the club was not happy with Dike as he has not made any significant progress since he took charge of the club this season.
The loss, the source said, was already eliciting ill feelings from some quarters including the fans that were hoping for a better performance from the club this season as against last season.
“Dike’s future with Heartland is doubtful; anything can happen any moment from now, because the club management is not happy with his performance so far, especially the FA Cup defeat on Sunday.
“There was hope that Dike could change the fortunes of the club when he resumed this season, but as it is now things are going from better to worse.
“Heartland is not doing well in the league and still could not win the State FA Cup. It is a shame to lose to a lower division side,” the player said.
On the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), Heartland has played eight games, won three, drew two, lost three to amass 11 points and placed 11th on the table.
However, Dike has said that the FA Cup defeat would not affect Heartland’s chances of grabbing the three points at stake at Nasarawa on Thursday in Week 10 clash billed for Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi.
“Of course, the Cup defeat will not affect our performance at Nasarawa United, I’m certain the loss will count for nothing. We are quite determined and positive to earn the desired three points at Nasarawa United.
“I have put the State FA Cup defeat against Papillo FC by the side as the focus right now is on the league clash at Nasarawa United on Thursday,” he said.
