The challenge of insecurity heightened in Bayelsa State on Wednesday with the attack and killing of two policemen by a gang of gunmen at Onuebum in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state.

The gunmen, numbering eight, also abducted two Lebanese in the attack.

It was gathered that the deceased policemen and the abducted Lebanese were attached to a construction firm, PAACHE Construction Company, working on a sand-dredging site in the area.

The hoodlums were said to have stormed the area in a speed boat at 12:25pm on Wednesday armed with assault rifles.

Sources said the gunmen invaded the sand-dredging site and shot repeatedly into the air, scaring indigenes and other dredging workers in the area who scampered for safety.

The deceased policemen had also fired back at the bandits but were killed by the volley of shots released by the armed men.

Police Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa Command, Asinim Butswat, confirmed the killing of the two policemen.
Butswat also disclosed  that the two abducted Lebanese nationals have been identified as Sarki Abi Chmouli and Ibrahim Abi Pherem.
