Gunmen suspected to be sea pirates on Thursday attacked a local boat named MV TARI in Kula area of Akuku-Toru Local Government Council of Rivers State, killing one person.

It was gathered that the bandits also kidnapped two others, the boat manager and his assistant, while others sustained injuries in the attack.

The boat was said to be conveying passengers and goods to Okpoama in Brass Local Government Area of neighbouring Bayelsa  State when the gunmen struck.

An eyewitness, who is the second engineer of the boat, Ebitimi Tekenah, said the sea pirates came in two speed boats, shooting sporadically at the boat which led to the death of a male passenger.

He said another male passenger was operated upon at the Okpoama Health Centre and a bullet that was lodged in his abdomen was removed.

“I was sleeping when I heard the shooting so I went to the front of the boat to hide. They found me and brought me out and broke two beer bottles on my head before they forced me into one of the speed boats.

“It was when I told them that I am the boat engineer that they dropped me and told me to start the boat and take the wounded home for treatment,” Tekenah said.

Meanwhile, the marine department and the anti-kidnapping unit of the Bayelsa State Police Command have rescued a kidnapped victim at Koluama, Southern Ijaw Local Government  Area of the state.
