Political economist and public affairs analyst, Professor Pat Utomi,  has urged Nigerians to discountenance the claim in some quarters that the  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is only picking up perceived enemies of  President Muhammadu Buhari  for interrogation.

Utomi, who said only the guilty can be afraid of being investigated by the anti-graft agency said what, should be importance to Nigerians is whether those being picked up are guilty of one offence or the other.

It will be recalled that the EFCC which was widely referred to as a ‘toothless bulldog’ under the immediate past administration has suddenly woken up to its responsibilities under the Buhari administration.

From the arrest of six top officers of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and 16 others from the commercial banks for scam involving N8 billion, to the arrest and prosecution of some former governors, and the integration of the Senate President’s wife, Toyin Saraki, the agency seems to be taking advantage of the president’s anti-corruption mantra of the Buhari administration.

But some Nigerians, especially the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have raised the alarm that the agency is only picking up those who are perceived enemies of the president.

But Utomi, who spoke in a chat with Daily Independent, said the same alarm was raised during the tenure of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

According to him “ Let me repeat the words I used when these same things were said during the tenure of former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.  When some people said EFCC is only picking Obasanjo’s enemies, I said ‘ Let the EFCC first pick Obasanjo’s enemies,  when they finish with his enemies, they will get to his friends’.

“I am repeating the same word now. It doesn’t matter who is picked. The question we should as is ‘ Those who are being picked now, do they do commit any wrongdoing or not’?   I think that should be the issue of concern to Nigerians.  Whether they are enemies of the president is immaterial as far as I am concerned.  It is usually the first cry of the guilty and I tend to discountenance it” he said.
