Despite move by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to empower consumers in the electricity market, the National Coordinator of Electricity Consumer Enlightenment Initiative, Mr. Ganiyu Makanjuola has insisted that provision of meters would work best for consumers.

NERC on Monday established the Nigerian Electricity Consumer Advocacy Network (NECAN) to consumers’ strong voice and power to counter the growing influence of operators over government institutions and policies in the electricity sector.

But Makanjuola told reporters at the sidelines, that all effort would be futile, until electricity consumers are metered and are able to control their consumption.

Federal Government had last year provided a bail out of N213billion to enable the operators meet up the financial demands of the sector and free up funds for the provision of distribution facilities including meters.

Government also through the Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo announced that it would spend another N50b to provide meters for consumers.

Makanjuola noted that “what the consumer wants from anybody is meter, by the time you meter us, we now tailor our consumption to our pockets. All the issue of switching off of lights will not come and that will really make Nigerians to really stand that electricity is expensive. You will not see someone going to buy a bulb of 500 watts and leave it on”.
