A non-governmental organization (NGO), Quintessential Business Women Association (QBWA), has initiated  measures to strengthen women empowerment and economic self-reliance in the country.

The group’s National Vice President, Rev. Janet Eyo, disclosed this at a one-day Imo State Women Empowerment programme.

She said that the   nation’s apex bank,  Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has so far released N2.5 billion out of which N2.4 bilion had been disbursed to achieve the aim.

Established in 2012 by the  Global President, Mrs Shimite Katung, with a mission to empower 50 corporative  societies in the 774 local government areas across  the country through  the issuance of soft revolving loans, Eyo assured that the package  was to assist the women to reduce  their dependence on their husbands and relations for survival.

According   to her, a total of 90 groups are expected to benefit from the largesse in Imo State while the beneficiaries are required to ensure that the benefits of the programme trickle down to women at the grassroots to enhance their standards of living.

While urging the beneficiaries of the package to ensure proper and judicious use of the funds, and to repay on time to enable others to equally benefit from it, Eyo showered encomium on the management of the Fame Micro Finance Bank Limited for providing N1.5 million as  flag off fund for the benefits in Imo.

She said that four states in the North East of the country had so far benefitted from the gesture, which would also promote literacy among women.

Imo State Coordinator of the association, Lady Agada Maureen, disclosed that the association which came on board three years ago with  difficulties has now surmounted her challenges.

“The proposed disbursement of the loan for our cooperative members seems to be a mirage but today, it has become a miracle as the long  expected empowerment of Imo women is now a reality and we can now  sleep with  our two eyes closed,” she stated.

Also, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer  of Fame Micro Finance Bank Limited, Mrs. Arinze Agube  Chichi, commended the  CBN for identifying with the visions of the association and enjoined the beneficiaries to reciprocate the gestures by  repaying the loan granted to them as when due.
