Kingsley Oparaku, a Nigerian professional golfer, became a millionaire in his first professional victory in 15 years, winning N1.86 million ($6,000) during the week at the West African Golf Tour (WAGT) in Smokin Hill Golf Resort, Ilara-Mokin, Akure, Ondo State.
The IBB International Golf and Country club member, who turned a professional player in 2001, has since struggled to win to no avail, until fate smiled on him at WAGT in million fold.
”It is an important victory because it is my first win as a professional in 15 years. I am very happy to end this jinx,” said Oparaku, who also plays on the Mena Tour in the UAE. To achieve this feat, Oparaku shot level par 288 over four days to win by three shots.
Andrew Oche Odoh finished second at three over par, while the trio Ebela Desire of Cameroon, Vincent Torgah of Ghana and Kamilu Bako of Nigeria were joint third at four over par. Nigeria’s Gift Willy placed sixth at +5 ahead of Emos Korblah of Ghana.
Oparaku recovered from a shaky start to leave Torgah behind with a pair of birdies at the ninth and 14th after the Ghanaian flirted with trouble with dropped shots on holes five, six, 16 and 17.
Odoh moved into second place with a birdie at the 13th, while Torgah, who suffered a heartache in the first series in Abuja, drilled an 18 footer for a birdie on hole 18 to tie for third position.
