The chief coach of golf at the Bayelsa State Sports Council, Celina James, has said that the people of Bayelsa State were embracing the game with keen interest.

The coach made the statement over the weekend in an exclusive interview from Yenagoa, the state capital adding that the construction of the first golf course in the state would soon be completed.

According to James, who is one of the two female professional golfers in Nigeria, “It is interesting to see that People of all status are interested in playing golf in Bayelsa State.

“Presently I have players from ages, 5-17 for the kids and teenagers and a lot of youths and adults. Though, the golf course in Bayelsa is still under construction, we have a driving range we’re managing at the moment.”

According to her, “The problem I’m having with the kids and teenage players is that of time to train. They are not available when school is session. But, sometime at weekends some are able to find time to train.”

Concluding, the coach regretted that the Bayelsa State team could not participate in the 2015 Lagos International Junior Open Championship, which took place at the Ikeja Golf Club owing to lack of funds.

“Owing to government bureaucracies, money approved could not be released before the tournaments teed off. So, Bayelsa team could not participate. It was painful, but we hope to make the next edition.”
