Scientists have confirmed that eating raw garlic twice a week can decrease your chances of getting lung cancer significantly. The research performed at Jiangsu Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in China stated that “garlic may potentially serve as a chemo-preventive agent for lung cancer,” suggesting its ability to prevent the risk of lung cancer, food navigator reports. The report suggests that by eating two cloves of raw garlic per day, smokers can reduce their risk of lung cancer by nearly 30 per cent.

Garlic has always been an integral part of eastern medicine, and also has been known to be linked to both the immune system and cardiovascular health.

A compound, called diallyl sulphide, is an antibiotic, anti-fungal body that is released when a garlic bulb sprouts into cloves, and it may be responsible for garlic’s long history of traditional medicine. In Germany, garlic tablets are prescribed to patients with atherosclerosis, otherwise recognized as the hardening of the arteries by build up fat and cholesterol, as a treatment for the disease.

Garlic has no fat, little natural sugars, no cholesterol and nearly no calories – about  four per clove. It contains a wide array of vitamins including vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, D and E. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin while vitamin E is fat soluble, together these two antioxidants reduce free radicals and help to prevent heart disease. It also contains manganese, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, iron, copper, selenium protein and enzymes. This powerful combination of nutrients gives garlic nutritional and healing value.

Garlic when taken as food or as a supplement combats diseases and health conditions such as high blood pressure that can cause strokes, heart attacks and aneurysms.

It has the ability to reduce high blood pressure because of its dilating effect on the blood vessels, it makes them wider therefore reducing the pressure in the blood vessels, it reduces the pulse rate and the rhythm of the heart.

Digestive disorders

Garlic is very effective for digestive conditions such as diarrhoea, colitis and dysentery. It works on the lymphatic system; it enhances peristalsis and the flow of digestive juices. It is also a good treatment for worms, it helps digestion and its antiseptic properties help in relieving gastrointestinal inflammation.

Other benefits

Garlic is known to reduce cholesterol and the risk of atherosclerosis.

It is also a powerful source of sulfur compounds. These sulfur compounds have shown to inhibit the growth of skin and breast cancer cells as well as other types of cancer. It is known best for keeping cold at bay. Eating one clove when you feel like you may have an onset of cold, improves your immune system and strengthens up the natural defense system of the body.

A natural aphrodisiac

Garlic is considered a natural aphrodisiac with no side effects. Experts have confirmed garlic as a tonic that is excellent as a cure for sexual disabilities, impotence and nervous exhaustion. They recommend it for old men who may be experiencing diminished sexual drive.

Because of the anticoagulant (blood thinner) properties of garlic, it is important to consult with your health-care practitioner before taking garlic supplements if you are taking blood thinners or aspirins daily. Talk with your doctor before taking garlic supplements if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to get pregnant. The effect on the fetus and breast feeding is unknown.
