President Mohammadu Buhari has named Assistant Comptroller, Abdullahi Gana, new Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

He replaces Ade Abolurin who retired from the paramilitary service after over 10 years in charge.

Gana, an indigene of Niger State, has held top positions in corps and is said to have emerged against all odds, amid what some claim was  “high wire politics” that set off an avalanche of retirements in the agency.

Details of those who were retired following the appointment were sketchy as at press time last night.

Addressing officers and men at the NSCDC headquarters on Friday, Abolurin lauded the government for the opportunity,  and charged staff of the agency  to remain steadfast in the pursuit of excellence, and extend loyalty to the incoming administration.

He expressed happiness that as a father, he has given birth to a son that is not just taking over from him, but would sustain the integrity of the paramilitary outfit.

According to Abolurin, “today our happiness is for son to sit as his father leaves and to take over successfully from him. So that is why it is good for you to have good children.

“I am happy, I feel fulfilled. Those I am leaving behind have grown old enough, they are experienced enough, to take over the mantle of leadership and to sustain the integrity of the Corp”.

Abolurin said he would like to be remembered as one who ‘came and conquered’.

“We came and established our name for posterity, and today we have a corps that is full of integrity, a corps that we can see credibility, a Corp that we can say is outstanding”

“I want the new CG to sustain the legacy of his father as a member of the family. The staff should support him as one of there brother who has emerged to take over from his father. So they should support him and give him maximum corporation” he charged

Meanwhile, the NSCDC boss has declared his readiness to uphold the legacy of Abolurin, noting that patience is the greatest virtues he imbibed from his predecessor.

An Aso Rock statement by presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said the new Civil Defence boss, hails from Muye in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State and holds a Bachelors degree in Sociology from the University of Sokoto, and a Masters in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Adesina said Buhari wished Abolurin, who has had a long stay at the helm of affairs of the NSCDC, a happy retirement.
