Funtua Local Government of Katsina State has distributed working tools to small and medium scale business owners to promote self reliance.

The council Chairman, Mr Yazid Abdullahi-Goya, said the effort was part of the people’s empowerment programme aimed at reducing poverty in the rural areas.

Abdullahi-Goya said the items included 60 refrigerators, 100 sewing machines, 100 grinding machines, 100 spaghetti-making machines with a bag of wheat flour each.

Other items, according to him, are 80 water pumping machines for irrigation farmers; 1,000 bags of cement; 90 bundles of roofing zinc; 60 motorcycles and 35 bicycles. The chairman said the items were provided from the N65 million SURE-P funds allocated to the area, noting that beneficiaries were selected from all 11 political wards.

He advised the beneficiaries to use the items judiciously on businesses capable of improving their lives along with their families.

The District Head of Funta, Alhaji Sambo Idris, commended the government for the support.

He expressed optimism that the items would enhance the people’s lives, especially in the rural areas where poverty was prevalent.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Malam Aliyu Gumel thanked the council for the gesture.

He also commended the committee for the transparent distribution and purchase of the tools.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was attended by traditional rulers, government officials, women and youth groups in the area.
