FSTC Lagos Celebrates Excellence, Rewards Students, Staff

The saying, that It is hard to beat a person who never gives up, best describes the renewed vigour with which the students, staff and management of the Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, Lagos promised to do more as the marked its 2015 annual speech, prize giving and valedictory day recently.

Speaking at the college ceremony attended by the top management of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja, the Director and Principal of the College, Reverend Chris Ugorji in his welcome address explained that the essence of the ceremony was to reward hard work as well as challenge others to put in extra effort to better the lots of the college.

He challenged the outgoing students of the college to continue to strive hard for excellence, contending that they should brace up for the challenges ahead because they have been adequately prepared to do so at the college.

“I rejoice with and congratulate individuals receiving awards and prizes today. To our students who are passing out, congratulations for completing your secondary education in this great College.

“Remember as you leave this college, you are stepping into an outside world full of challenges, brace up to face the challenges and overcome them because there lies your success in life. Let the spirit of God be your guide. Be disciplined at all times, be good ambassadors of the college so that you can be useful to yourself and the society at large,” he added.

Reverend Ugorji  affirmed that the students have been offered the skills and opportunities that have positioned them for success and try their best in order to make their dreams come through.

As he listed the achievements of the college to include; facelift of the administrative building, procurement of 30-seat Toyota Coaster bus and successful hosting of the World Chef Day, he also enumerated challenges facing the college to include; dearth of classrooms and furniture, provision of staff quarters for the staff, and comfortable staff room for teachers.

Other areas of need listed by the Director are; replacement of old machines in the technical workshop, dearth of competent technical personnel, shortfall of ICT based learning facilities and training and re-training of technical teachers.

In the award of prizes for proficiency and academic excellence for the 2013/2014 academic session, Udunna Oluchi Tessy, Lucky Apiafi, Ojo Motunrayo, and Babalola Ayodipupo emerged with overall best results in Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), National Examination Council (NECO), and West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) examinations respectively.

Apart from students who won prizes in the different subjects’ classifications, two teachers- Mr. Ogbodo John and Hilary Otasowie were adjudged as best part-time teachers in the sciences and technical education respectively.

Dignitaries at the event include; Director, Technology and Science Education, Dr (Mrs) Roseta Isiavwe and Director, Basic and Secondary Education, Barrister Uwaezuoke D. both of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja.

Awards in the non-teaching category were won by Messer Nwachukwu .M and Shaibu Taiwo, who were adjudged as best cleaner and most committed driver respectively.
