A robbery suspect, John Uche, currently held in the cells of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command has confessed that bad friends lured him into an attempt to snatch phones from unsuspecting victims.

Uche, 22, from Abi Local Government area of Cross River State confessed that robbery is bad, but that the devil made him to join the bad gang.

The suspect who claimed to be a manager in a company in Ijanikin area of Lagos State where pure water is produced, was arrested penultimate  week by the operatives of the Festac Police Division and transferred to SARS for further investigation.

Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Police Command, Kenneth Nwosu confirmed his arrest.

Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said that they were three suspects, adding that two escaped.

He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, had given the officer-in-charge of SARS in Lagos, Abba Kyari, a Superintendent of Police (SP) a mandate to fish out the two suspects.

He also disclosed that Uche will be charged to court as soon as investigation is concluded.

Confessing to Daily Independent, Uche said, “I was arrested because robbery is not my field, I have never robbed before, it was my first attempt which made escape difficult for me while my colleagues escaped. In the factory where I was managing, I was paid N3 per bag of pure water produced while packer were paid N2 per bag. Ilive at 22, Abonanja Street, Oko-Efo. I worked in that company called Tiness for four years. I was sacked with other workers because the business was no longer booming, so I became idle.

“Some of my friends invited me to help them in  washing clothes at Maza-Maza because they do laundry business. I do not know they were robbers. One day, they said I should follow them to Festac, I did not Know they were going for a robbery operation. So we went to rob and collected phones in the streets. We have not succeeded. “One of them brought the only gun with two cartridges for the operation. It was an Awka made double barrel shot gun. As we were moving around in the night, the Abokis who were night guards challenged us. We have also robbed phones at Maza-Maza before this one. We stole five phones and they gave me N3,000 after they sold them. I was arrested because robbery is not my field, I have never robbed before, it is the devil that led me to it.

“My parents are dead, I have two brothers and four sisters, they have visited me in Festac Police Division after my arrest, but since I was transffered to SARS, they have not come. The Aboki that arrest me collected the gun that fell from Friday as he was escaping”.

The suspect said he  completed his secondary education in 2011 and wrote JAMB exams in the same year.
