Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka has beaten world tennis number one, Novak Djokovic, to lift the French Open title on Sunday to earn a second grand slam.

Wawrinka came into the tournament as an underdog

and his win in Paris denied Djokovic a coveted French Open title, something that has eluded him for a while.

“I’m sure you’ll win Roland Garros,” Wawrinka told Djokovic as he addressed the crowd.

On Sunday Wawrinka hit 59 winners; Djokovic got 30 and made 41 unforced errors.

The Serbian came out stronger, creating a break point in an opening game that featured the longest rally of the fortnight at 39 strokes.

Wawrinka became the first man since Mats Wilander in 1988 to win the men’s title after being its junior champ.
