Dr Adekunle Meduna, Head, Environmental Modeling and Biometrics Department, Forestry Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), Ibadan, on Sunday urged the Federal Government to support national parks.

Fielding questions from newsmen in Ibadan, Meduna also urged the government to enforce the law prohibiting killing of wild animals in the country.

He said wild animals kept at the parks had enormous aesthetic values, which attracted local and foreign investors.

“Wild animals such as elephants, lion and chimpanzee have a lot of touristic values, which many developed countries are investing on; we can make it if we harness their potentials,” he said.

Meduna stressed the need for wildlife conservation because of their advantages, adding, “when the herbivorous animals in the forest are killed, the tiger enters human settlement and attack domesticated species.

“Also, wild animals like lion, leopard, and cheetah occupy top positions in the food chain by the time conservation of wild animals are reduced.”

The forester said the gain values of wild animals were high, adding that they also have scientific values.

“Scientists test drug capabilities on these animals; if they are not available that means humans will now be used.

“By the time you conserve their population to a large number, authorized hunters can crop and that will result to a lot of meat and leather materials.”

Meduna called on state and local governments to ensure that hunters had licences to hunt or carry gun.
