Food Shortage, Hunger To End As FG Approves ‘Green Alternative’ Agric Policy

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved a road map document on the policies and objectives for agriculture and food sufficiency in Nigeria.

The FEC meeting, held at the council chambers, at the State House, Abuja, which had President Muhammadu Buhari presiding, discussed a number of issues, including the agriculture road map.

Chief Audu Ogbe, Minister of Agriculture, told newsmen shortly after the closed-door meeting that the document, titled Green Alternative, outlines government’s intentions and processes in a detailed manner, to take Nigeria back to agriculture and make the country self-sufficient in food as well as produce enough for export as an economic mainstay.

Although the minister did not give full details of the new policy, he indicated that it would make Nigeria an agro-centred country, in contrast to the present near-mono-product economy hinged on oil and gas.

If properly implemented, the Green Alternative would transform Nigeria, with vast tracts of arable land from a net importer of staple food such as rice, wheat, cooking oil, fish and poultry, to a self-sufficient exporter of these items and more.

The procedure, enumeration and implementation of the document is expected to be made public in the next few days.
