The out-gone Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Dr Philipa Idogho during the weekend stressed the need for the Federal Government  to focus more on the development of technical and vocational Education if the country  is to achieve sustainable economic development.

Dr Idogho who made the call while fielding questions from newsmen at Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area Headquarters of Edo State on Sunday, said the call has become necessary as technical and vocational education would provide the needed skilled manpower needed to drive the economic growth and development of the state.

She said asides curbing the issue of importation of skilled manpower as well as capital flight, development of technical and vocational education would also substantially address the challenges of unemployment in the country.

Dr. Idogho, The former Rector noted that the nations of the world which are desirous of development have made the development of its technical and vocational education a priority.

The former rector who decried the importation of skills, stressed that this would be a thing of the past only if the government would empower the polytechnics to develop a curriculum best suited to drive that sector.

According to her: “The entire world is moving towards technical and vocational education, which is what we need. We need people with skilled manpower.

Recently the federal government announced that skills are going to be developed because we import our skills meanwhile we have people we can teach these skills and who already have it.

We import skills to do our roads but we have them in the polytechnics.

It only requires us to develop the curriculum to suit what the nation needs at a particular time and redirect our focus to this area and retrain those that have been trained before or start training the ones that we need.” she stated.

While advising the government to ensure that only people with deep knowledge of an educational institution should be made the head of such an institution, she said it would not only ensure a streamless and uninterrupted academic calendar, but would also enhance the growth and development of such an institution.

Idogho who is a product of Auchi polytechnic where she held sway for eight years as the rector said: “I knew the problems and so I did everything I could to ensure that the school is put in a proper footing.

Definitely it is good that those that are in a particular system, who knows the system very well should be made to head such an institution, except otherwise”.
