Flying Eagles hope of progressing from the group stage of the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup depends on the outcome of its second group match against North Korea in the early hours of Thursday.

The Nigerian side must win this match or forget the tournament. This is because of the 4-2 loss to Brazil in its opening match. The Koreans must win this match or forget the tournament, having also lost its opening match 5-1 to Hungary.

Even a draw will not do the team any good as its chances of qualifying from the group will become slimmer.

Flying Eagles must throw everything at the Asians and ensure that it secures the three points.

On paper, Nigeria is the favourite team, since football is no mathematics, victory will go to the side that scored the highest number of goals.

Coach Manu Garba must rectify the defensive lapses noted in the first match, and should stick to the team that played the AYC and the friendly games.

Former Golden Eaglets coach, John Obuh, has advised Manu to make some changes in the team.

Meanwhile, Isaac Success and Ifeayin Matthew may face late fitness test after they missed the team’s training on Tuesday. Apart from them, the team is in good shape for what could determine Flying Eagles’ fate at the tournament.

Garba, who admitted that the team flopped in its opening match, insisted that the team would fight back into contention.

“It was a very disappointing result but I never expected us to lose so woefully to Brazil,” said Manu.

“But we will win our next two games to be back in contention in this tournament.”
