Food shortages and outbreak of waterborne diseases loom in Delta State Coastline Local Government Areas of Patani, Bomadi and parts of Burutu following the unimaginable devastation of food crops and the contamination of the only source of drinkable water by the perennial flooding that have overflown its banks.

Prices of basic common food items have like garri, plantain, pepper, coco yam as well other farm produce which managed to get the affected communities in the three Ijaw speaking local government areas have skyrocketed.

A community leader from Patani, Chief Richman Yinbiri who spoke with our correspondent said, farmers from Patani, Aven, Agoloma, Abare and Angiama were taken unawares by the magnitude of the flood making it difficult for them to salvage the submerged crops from their farmland.

Yinbiri said the water current became so high that it was announced locally that nobody should venture into the high tide and current areas trying to uproot tuber crops to avoid being drown.

Continuing he said because of the strict monitoring and compliance, most families have to face the brunt of starvation.

At Bomadi Council Area, the situation was not different as most the communities including Ogriagbene, Esanma, Ogbein-ama ,Akugbene, Okoloba and Ogo-Eze communities were mostly hit by the flood that overflew the River Forcados and River Ramos as most of the locals are either farmers or petty fishermen.

Mr. Oyas Omoro is immediate past community chairman of Esanma said, the flood not only rendered his communities inhabitants homeless but has also brought waterborne diseases to the entire coastline communities.

Omoro said that the only source of drinkable water had been overflown by the flood and contaminated.

Speaking further he said that to make things worse, the only access road linking the community and Gbaregolor had been cut off by the flood making rescue of victim of the waterborne diseases to Bomadi difficult.

He called on the state government and well meaning Nigerian to come to the aid of the community.
