A fire incident that could have claimed lives and destroyed valuable properties was on Thursday averted at the building housing the Federal Ministry of Education and Police Service Commission which is located around the Three Arms Zone,Abuja.

The fire incident which occurred as a result of power surge happened at about 1.30pm was however put under control by men of the federal fire agency few minutes later.

However, the Minister of Education Ibrahim Shekarau who was having a meeting and a kind of valedictory session with Principals of the 104 Unity schools in the country at the second floor of the building was rescued from the scene by security operatives attached to him.

As the fire alarms at the building came on, pandemonium broke out at the complex as civil servants scampered for safety after several efforts to use fire extinguishers at the complex to put out the fire failed.

Men of the Federal Fire Service who arrived the place at about 1:56pm had difficulty in accessing the location of the fire even as it took security operatives hectic time to control human and vehicular movements around the place.

Shekarau who was led out of the complex by men of Nigerian Police into his car was accompanied by his aides who also left the complex immediately.

There were however conflicting accounts of the exact point where the fire started.

While the Minister of State, Viola Onwuliri who later briefed journalists after taking brief from the fire fighters said the fire was caused by electric panel on the 5th floor of the complex eyewitnesses said the fire actually started on the 10th floor.

Her words: “ I think the situation is really being managed by the fire service. I have gone to commend them for their prompt intervention, you can see how many trucks they came along with and I was talking to the man in charge of this operation this afternoon, he assured that they found the point where the fire started, 5th floor and that they assured they would get everything under control. But very importantly at least we are sure nobody is hurt. The fire people are working.
