Just as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was battling to announce the result of the governorship election which took place in Abia State on April 11, thugs have set the Isiala Ngwa South office of the commission on fire.
Sources told Daily Independent that the arsonists arrived the INEC office late Sunday night, poured petrol on the building, set fire on it and disappeared.
Consequently, the fire threw the entire vicinity into pandemonium as people took to their heels in fright.
It has not been established as at press time those responsible and their motive for the action, but sources that pleaded anonymity said it might not be unconnected with the governorship election held in the area on Saturday.
The figures of the result released by INEC showed that the PDP won the poll with 7,133 as against All Progressives Grand Alliance’s (APGA) 5,686 but it was enmeshed in controversy as the figures were disputed.
Sources said the council staff could not stop the invading group who wielded dangerous weapons and threatened to kill them, if they made any suspicious movement, adding that the result of the poll might have triggered off the incident.
The incident was later reported at the Police Force Divisional Headquarters, Oloba, where the matter was being investigated.
Though the spokesman for the commission, Victor Enabor, said he was not aware of the incident, he promised to investigate it.
The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dr. Anthony Agbazuere, who hails from the council area confirmed the incident.
Isiala Ngwa South is also said to be the home council area of the governorship candidate of the APGA, Dr. Alex Otti, where he relocated late last year from Arochukwu.
