Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, has said that since the announcement of the National Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP) 29 companies had signed commitments with technical partners to set up assembly operations to produce cars, Special Utilitiy Vehicles (SUVs), pick-up trucks and buses, among others, in the country.

Aganga, who spoke while inaugurating the National Automotive Repository Portal (NARP), of the National Automotive Council (NAC) in Abuja, also informed that Hyundai, Nissan, Kia cars and Shacman trucks are now assembled in Nigeria.

He added that 11 new companies, including Honda and Toyota, have been given bona-fide manufacturing status and are on track to start assembly operations this year.

According to him, the government’s focus had shifted to the development of local content, saying that “a local content development strategy has been produced and its implementation committee has been inaugurated.

The committee, he said, is made up of experts from the assembly plants, local content manufacturers, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), relevant government agencies and international organisations like the United Nations Industrial Organisation (UNIDO).

Aganga explained that the automobile repository portal is an effective and sustainable system that keeps information on Vehicles Identification Number (VIN) of vehicles manufactured and imported into Nigeria.

He said the application acts as a central repository of VIN for free access to stakeholders and maintains the database of auto stakeholders such as car manufacturers.

It also supports data exchange among other government agencies’ system to keep up-to-date database information of VIN.
