FG Does Not Mean Well For Education – ASUU

Benin zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has accused the Federal Government (FG) of exhibiting lackadaisical attitude towards the education sector.

The union made the accusation in a statement signed by its coordinator, Professor Anthony Monyei-Emina, on Tuesday in Benin City.

The aggrieved lecturers recalled that union’s face-off with the FG in the past five years had centred on the issue of poor funding of the nation’s universities among other issues.

They lamented that the numerous promises made by the government to address the issues had always ended up not been actualised.

“ASUU has been making overtures to government, reminding it of its obligations, all to no avail. Several letters have been written and a visit was made recently to the Minister of Education by the national leadership of the union. Nothing meaningful came from government. In fact, the Minister of Education displayed crass ignorance of the issues which is rather appalling,” the ASUU stated.

Going further, the ASUU stressed that “universities are facing renewed onslaught with shortfall in subvention for salary and other overheads. The result is that most federal universities have been paying fractions monthly salary since the beginning of the year.

The statement added: “Payments for essential services, including municipal are problematic and in arrears. Sabbaticals are no longer possible because the universities cannot pay.”

They alleged that the Treasury Single Account (TSA) is further compounding the situation “to which the universities have been compelled against the principle of autonomy as contained in the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement.”

Instead of addressing these enormous funding issues the universities are going through, ASUU said more universities are been established by some state governors “in complicity with the National Universities Commission (NUC).”
