The Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) has said that the ongoing maiden FCT Elementary Cricket Coaching Course is to enable primary school children to learn the game.

Adekunle Adegbola, the federation’s Regional Developmental Officer (RDO) for North Central, made this known in an interview in Abuja on Thursday.

Adegbola, who explained that the long-term objective of the course was to develop the game in FCT, urged parents and teachers to encourage the children to participate in cricket programmes.

‘’This coaching course is going to take athletes through the long-term and short-term development and this is the pathway to cricket development in Nigeria.

‘’Grassroots development has taken a new shape now in the FCT and I employ parents and also teachers to allow their students to partake in cricket programmes.

‘’Cricket is just a game evolving in Nigeria and we want more participation and more awareness most especially in the northern area.

‘’We want the students to start playing cricket from primary school and also cultivate the habit and adhere to the rules of the game.

‘’We are going to train them and teach them to perform well, train to compete in the nearest future.“

According to Adegbola, ten schools have been asked to present two teachers and two pupils each to participate in the course.

He said that at the end of the course, the pupils would have learnt the basics of the game.

The five states, namely: Anambra, Lagos, Rivers, Kaduna and FCT are hosting the course which began on Oct. 6.

The course is expected end on Oct. 9.
