Public schools in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been shut down indefinitely.

The shut-down order, it was learnt, was given by the leadership of the FCT chapter of Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) over poor welfare.

Students attending some of the public schools, especially in Wuse and Asokoro districts had reported for academic activities on Monday morning only to be asked to return home for undisclosed reasons.

It was initially thought that the closure of schools was as the result of the fuel scarcity currently taking its toll on the nation.

It was, however, later learnt that NUT had ordered the closure of the schools with effect from Monday owing to arrears of some outstanding allowances owed the workers by the FCT administration, including non- implementation of 2013 and 2014 promotion backlog.

When Daily Independent put a call through to the Director, Media and Publicity of Federal Ministry of Education, Olu Lipede, he denied knowledge of the development, insisting that all schools were in session irrespective of the fuel scarcity that has hit the entire nation.
