Management of the National Population Commission (NPC) has suspended the on-going recruitment in the Commission which has been discovered to be fraught with irregularities.

This decision formed part of the resolutions of the 37 National Commissioners representing each state of the federation and Abuja after their meeting at the Commission’s headquarters on Wednesday in Abuja.

Addressing newsmen after the meeting that lasted for over four hours, Dr. Tunde Lakoju, National Commissioner representing Edo State, said the management of the NPC took a critical look at the recruitment which is about to end, and discovered a lot of irregularities.

He said following these discoveries, the management decided to suspend the recruitment process and also set up a committee to investigate the whole exercise.

According to him, “We took a critical look at the employment we are about to conclude. A lot of our staff, we have lost some of them to death, resignation or retirement.

“We have a waiver to replace them from the Federal Character Commission and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

“That is exactly what we have done. As a Commission, we have noticed some irregularities in the process of recruitment.

“Because of this, after we have deliberated on it and looked at it extensively, we decided to step down the recruitment. We have also set up a Committee to look at how it what was done.

“After the committee’s work, we will now issue letters of employment to those who we think have met our requirements.

“The irregularities happened based on the number of persons authorized to recruit. They went beyond the number. We have asked the committee to look at it and follow the due process.”

On the conduct of the 2016 Census, Lakoju said the Commission was waiting for the president’s proclamation on it.

He explained that the Commission had forwarded the estimate of the budget and other logistics, adding thatPresident Muhammadu Buhari was being awaited to take action based on their recommendations.

He said until the President makes the proclamation, the NPC does not know whether the National Census would be conducted or not.

He however said the commission had begun the demarcation of areas in preparation for the census.
