Worried about the dangers posed by climate change, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola and members of diplomatic corps on Tuesday hinged human survival on the ability to sustain climate change mitigations and continuous development of adaption strategies that will preserve nature and its gifts.

They spoke at the opening ceremony of the seventh Lagos State Climate Change Summit holding in Lagos, noted that nature does not need human to survive whereas human beings need nature for his survival; adding that human beings will come and go but nature will remain.

The Governor said: “As we have heard from conservation international, nature and the environment do not need us, but we need them. They will evolve, can we evolve? Nature and environment have been here long before we came. Many like you and I have come and gone; we have come and certainly we would go.

“The greater challenge therefore is for us to understand how to preserve nature’s gifts, to adapt to nature’s evolution, militate against the hazards of the environment and seek for sustainability in all that we do.”

He stakeholders and Lagosians for their support in that last seven years and used the opportunity to drum up support for the Lagos State Governor-elect Akinwunmi Ambode, saying with their support, the state government’s effort on improving the environment would be sustained.

“To you all, my gratitude is deep and profound. The only thing I can add is to make a request, that as I yield the baton of government to our governor-elect, Akinwunmi Ambode, you will not drop the baton.

“I urge you to give him more support than you have given to me to continue this awareness as regards danger to the environment and to evolve mitigations and adaptation strategies that will help us all survive and realise our aspirations.
