Farmers in the Dutse Local Government area of Jigawa State have started planting their crops, following the commencement of rains in the state this year, an investigation by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) revealed.

A NAN reporter in Dutse, who visited many rural communities, found that farmers were busy planting on their farms.

NAN reports that there was a downpour last Saturday and on Monday in the local government area.

A farmer in Bukki village, Malam Jama’are Muhammad, who was seen in company of his children, harrowing and planting, said he was planting groundnut.

Muhammad said he had earlier cleared the farm and applied local manure.

The farmer said they were encouraged by the level of rains recorded in the area in the last two days and that was why they decided to go ahead and plant.

Malam Ali Tanko, also a farmer in Dasina, said he planted millet and sorghum on his farm.

Tanko also said farmers in the area were encouraged to start planting because of the level of rains in the area in the last couple of days.

Malam Ado Musa, the Village Head of Warwade, who is also a farmer, said he was optimistic that the area would record a bumper harvest this farming season following the early rains.

Musa said that farmers in his domain were ready for this year’s farming activities and urged the state government to provide fertilisers and other inputs to farmers on time.

The village head explained that early distribution of fertilisers would enhance availability of the commodity and encourage agricultural activities.

According to him, farming is the major occupation of the people in the area. Farmers in Warwade community cultivate throughout the year, utilising the Warwade Dam for irrigation.

Some of the crops cultivated in the area are millet, sorghum, wheat, maize, groundnut and sugar cane.
