Ex Falcons coach, Ismaila Mabo, has kicked against the move by the Nigeria Football Federation to hire a foreign coach for the team.

The team which has come under intense criticism after its dismal showing at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada, where the team crashed out from the group stage. The outcome of the tournament further led to the sacking of Edwin Okon, who was replaced by his assistant, Christopher Danjuma.

However, Danjuma failed in his first attempt as the team was eliminated from the Rio Olympic qualifier after losing 2-1 to Equatorial Guinea at the weekend. It was the second time the team won’t be participating at the second biggest sport showpiece in the world.

With renewed calls for the hiring of a foreign coach that will tinker the team, Mabo insisted that the football house should look inward by appointing an indigenous coach.

“I don’t think what we need now is a foreign coach,” Mabo said, “I think we need to look inward for better replacements.

“The team has not done well recently and the results have not been good but I will not advise we get a foreign coach because we have capable hands here at home and I think that is the step we should be taking at this point,” he opined.

The Falcons has since returned from Equatorial Guinea, and will proceed on a one week break before regrouping for the All Africa Games.
