Nigeria’s Falconets beat their South African counterparts 1-0 in Johannesburg on Sunday to qualify for next year’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Papua New Guinea 3-1 on aggregate. Falconets won the first leg in Abuja 2-1 with Chinwendu Ihezuo scoring on the half hour mark before the Falconets added a second a minute into first half added time when winger Uchenna Kanu’s shot was turned in by a Basetsana defender.

The Basetsana however earned a penalty in second half added time with Gabriela Salgado tucking away from the spot. But there was no fight back from the South Africans on Sunday as Ihezuo struck after 16 minutes in Johannesburg to secure a deserved win for the Nigerian ladies.

The Falconets will now fly Africa’s flag at next year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in Papua New Guinea where they would be hoping to finally wrap their hands on the World Cup after two near misses. The Falconets reached the final at both the 2012 and 2014 FIFA U-20 World Cups only to be upstaged by Germany on both occasions.
