The campaign organisation of the Bayelsa State governor and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Seriake Dickson, on Saturday, raised the alarm that fake Nigerian currencies allegedly used by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to bribe voters in last weekend’s governorship election are now in circulation in the state.

Director of Publicity of Dickson’s campaign team, Jonathan Obuebite, said in a statement that the monies were estimated to be N2 billion.

He revealed that the eagle, which is one of the security features of the original currencies, does not feature on the fake ones.

Obuebite said the currencies, especially the N1,000 notes, had the same serial numbers while the quality of the paper used in printing was not the same with the original currencies.

He said that information at the disposal of the campaign organisation showed that the APC was planning to print more currencies for the re-run election in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

He said that the printing and circulation of the fake notes by the APC had vindicated the governor and the PDP over their earlier claims that the APC wanted to rig the election and induce voters with fake currencies.

Obuebite therefore called on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to take urgent steps to mop up the fake notes in circulation in the state.

He stressed the need for proper investigations to be carried out and the perpetrators of the unlawful act brought to book as the fake currencies portend serious danger for the economy of the state.

He warned  business operators  to be vigilant and watch out for any customer who would use any of the fake notes to transact businesses with them.

He also alleged that the security personnel that were on election duty were paid mostly with the same fake notes.

Obuebite condemned “the desperation, the hook and crook disposition of the APC and its governorship candidate whose plan to take over governance in Bayelsa is anchored on deceit, complete lies and violence”.

“They  have continued to prove and from their antecedents that they do not mean well for the people”, he said.
