A fake Army Major, identified simply as Major Hassan, who allegedly claimed to be from the 19 Battalion, Koko, Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State , has swindled the Otota (Prime Minister) of Okpara Inland, Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State, Chief Johnson Unuero of N100,000 following allegations of rape, kidnap and gun-running.

But the community heads in a statement by Chief Eruteya Ighorodje, the Okarorho of Okpara (eldest man), Chief Hitler Odudukudu , the elders council’s secretary, and two other senior chiefs, A.M. Umude and J. Arhagba, debunked the allegations against Chief Unuero, describing them as falsehood and malicious.

The statement said the suspected Major Hassan, had visited the resident of the community leader in company of Chief Raphael Okejevwa, where Hassan told Unuero of the allegations against him as gun-runner, rapist and kidnapper, as alleged by Mr. Ovoke Ubuara , a former vigilante chairman of the community.

According to the statement, Hassan also said he recorded the voice of Ubuara whom he alleged levelled the allegations against the community leader (Unuero), and also called for the arrest of Unuero, two of his chiefs and Friday Enakerakpo ,the present vigilante chairman.

The statement said, “Hassan came to Unuero’s house and said one Ubuara, former vigilante chairman told him that Unuero is a rapist, kidnapper and hires guns to robbers. And that the present vigilante chairman is also the same and they should be arrested including two other chiefs of the community.

“While ‘Major Hassan’ was leaving Unuero’s house, he demanded for fifty thousand naira (N50, 000) on the pretence to handle same to the Commanding Officer 19 Battalion to stop the arrest.

“Hassan called the following day that the C.O felt slighted hearing the meager amount of fifty thousand, and Hassan asked for another fifty thousand naira which was paid into Mr. Onuoma A. Ezeokwu, Ecobank Account (1391015742), making it One Hundred thousand (N100,000) for the C.O as alleged by Hassan.

“Major Hassan had earlier told Unuero that any time Ubuara was invited for questioning that he should be invited to testify, but on the day the Elders Council held its meeting, Unuero put a call to Major Hassan and when he picked, he said he cannot come that he has been transferred to Edo State and later said he no longer work at Edo but Taraba State.

All attempts to reach ‘Major Hassan’ for comments failed but Ubuara told Independent that he had never met any ‘Major Hassan’ or discussed with him on any issue. He said he was happy when they said Hassan was coming to testify against him, but expressed surprised when they said the same ‘Major Hassan’ had told them he has been transferred to Benin later Taraba State.

Ubuara explained that on the day he was invited, he had earlier informed the 19 Battalion of Major Hassan’s antecedents, where they sent a delegation to observe the elders’ council meeting and eventually one of the chiefs, Rapheal Okejevwa, was invited and was advised that the community leaders should do their best in fishing out ‘Major Hassan’.

When contacted, the Commanding Officer, 19 Battalion could not be reached but a senior army officer in the command confirmed the incident.

He, however, said the command had no such officer as Major Hassan, adding that the community knows the fake army major and only them can fish him out.
