The thumb print of Bayelsa State governor and governorship candidate of the PDP, Seriake Dickson, was not recognized by the card reader when he presented himself for accreditation in the state governorship election on Saturday.
Similar fate also befell his wife, Rachel and his mother who could not be accredited by INEC officials due to the failure of the card reader.

They had arrived their Unit 6, Toru-Orua community, Ward 2, in Sagbama Local Government at 10:40 am to undergo the accreditation exercise.

In an interview with newsmen, Dickson lamented the failure of the card reader to capture his finger print and those of his wife and his mother.

He expressed concern that the use of a malfunctioning electoral machine like the card readre could portray Nigeria as “an unserious and fraudulent country”.

“My thumb print cannot be recognized. So, we have a serious  problem as far as the use of this  so-called smart card reader is concerned in this country.

“I hope we don’t continue to portray ourselves as an unserious and fraudulent country, manipulating anything and everything.

“It’s unfortunate that my finger print couldn’t be recognized, the same for my wife, the same for my mother”, he said.

Although he wished INEC well in the conduct of the governorship election, Dickson said he had personally observed how long it took the commission’s personnel to accredit one eligible voter.

The governor disclosed that he had received reports of alleged APC-sponsored attacks on PDP supporters in Brass, Ekeremor and Southern Ijaw Local Government Areas during the period of accreditation exercise.

According to Dickson, one person was feared dead at Oporoma, headquarters of Southern Ijaw following the mayhem reportedly unleashed on PDP supporters.

He accused the Minister of State for Agriculture and Rural Development, Heineken Lokpobiri and his younger sibling, Jonathan Lokpobiri, of allegedly engineering attack on PDP supporters in Ekeremor Town.

“I have received disturbing remarks of premeditated brutal attack on my party supporters in Brass Town, in Twon-Brass, premeditated attacks sponsored by the Minister of State and his younger brother in Ekeremor Town and APC-sponsored attack on party supporters in Oporoma in Southern Ijaw resulting in the death of at least one person.

“I am not convinced of the steps that the Federal-controlled security agencies have taken in creating a conducive and  safe and secure political environment for this voting to take place.

“I and my party have time and time again while campaigning for peace, we have always pointed out that the other side is preparing not for an election but for war.

“They have armed their thugs with police and military uniforms and in some cases protected by the security agencies themselves.

“The security agencies have all the time to investigate and apprehend and stop what has become a mayhem that is currently going on.

“We are taking stock of all these and we hope and expect that appropriate legal steps be taken against these  notorious criminals who are unleashing terrible mayhem and violence on their fellow citizens all in the name of politics.

“Everyone knows who they are, the security agencies know who they are, the security agencies are right there when these things are going on”, Dickson stated.

He commended Bayelsans for their determination to vote and urged them to resist all forms of intimidation in the voting process.
