Cesc Fabregas netted late on to give Chelsea a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.

The Spaniard, wearing a protective mask, finished neatly after being found by Eden Hazard, who had collected a poor kick from Rob Green and worked his way into the QPR box.

The victory brings Jose Mourinho and his troops a further step closer towards the Premier League title that they have looked very likely to claim for quite some time.

QPR, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone, having played a match more than the sides immediately above and below them on the ladder.

The first half of the game was a battle, resembling a high-level amateur clash as much as it did a Premier League encounter. During the hustle-bustle period, QPR enjoyed the better positions and threatened more frequently, but technically the Blues went closest, as a misdirected Willian cross came back off a post early on.

Generally, Chelsea’s defensive men did very well do deal with a succession of high balls into the but their attackers could only manage to create half-chances, the best of them falling to Ramires, who diverted Didier Drogba’s cross wide.

However, after Thibaut Courtois had saved a long-range Charlie Austin drive at the other end, Fabregas missed a good opportunity to give the visitors the lead just before the break, heading over when Branislav Ivanovic’s cross evaded Drogba.

QPR wasted strong attacking situations and options early in the second period, before Chelsea produced a fine chance, as Ivanovic failed to connect sufficiently with substitute Oscar’s corner, which had been flicked on by Drogba.

The Blues appeared to have asserted their authority but against the run of play, Matt Phillips collected Bobby Zamora’s low centre, turned well and drove a well-struck effort at the target, only for Courtois to parry the ball wide.

Austin was also unsuccessful with a double effort – a host of Chelsea bodies were in the striker’s way – as QPR continue to try to steal a victory.

However, it was Chelsea who won it, as Hazard controlled Green’s attempted punt, played an excellent one-two with Oscar, and rolled the ball back for Fabregas, who slid a finish home from 15 yards.
