FAAN raids cargo terminal, seize N1m worth of goods

Goods and property worth about N1 million were seized during a special raid carried out by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on the Hajj Camp and Cargo terminal of the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos.

According to a source, the special raid which was supervised by the Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the terminal, FAAN, Mr Uche Ukeni did not record any casualty but that a 31-year-old female suspect was arrested during the raid.

Speaking on the raid, Ukeni said that the suspect would be taken to the Tango City police post inside the international terminal of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) for prosecution.

Two canopies were discovered at the terminal; one used as a church and the other used to sell assorted drinks were illegally mounted.

While the canopy mounted to sell assorted drinks was destroyed by FAAN security men, the other, which was used as a church was spared because a church service going on there as at the time the raid took place.

Ukeni said that FAAN had to raid the cargo terminal to rid the area of touts and hawkers operating illegally there, adding that  these illegal activities allowed people who have no business at the airport to hang around as touts, thereby causing unnecessary panics and mayhems at the airport.

On the lady that was arrested, he said that the suspect claimed she sells rice but no such item was found with her as at the time she was  arrested. According to him, “we seized over 20 cartons of assorted beer, 15 cartons of assorted soft drinks, over 15 pieces of water-melon, one bunch of unripe plantain, five tubers of yam”.
